Hummingbird Hill Vineyard

Hummingbird Hill Vineyard grows premium Sauvignon Blanc on a steep west facing volcanic hillside on the eastern edge of the Sonoma Coast AVA.  This challenging site is uniquely suited for growing ultra premium “cool climate” Sauvignon Blanc.  The 12 acre vineyard is blessed with warm sunny days, daily afternoon breezes from the Petaluma Gap, and cool, often foggy nights and mornings.  Temperatures vary 30 degrees between day and night throughout the growing season.  This gives the fruit a long, slow ripening adding layer upon layer of depth producing fruit of distinction.

The vines, both Clone 1 and Sauvignon Musqué, are grafted onto 101-14 rootstock and the vineyard is laid out with 5 x 9 spacing on a VSP trellis system.  The vineyard is certified as Fish Friendly and is sustainably farmed using barn owls, kestrels and other natural predators to our advantage.  The fertile but thin volcanic soil is both a blessing and a curse.  There is both heavy clay and "chalk" (which is really compressed volcanic dust), combined with lots and lots of rocks.

Farming is difficult and the yields are low, but the struggling vines and abundant minerals reward us with unique flavors and richness, so it’s definitely worth the effort.  Clone 1 contributes citrus, fig and minerality while the Sauvignon Musqué contributes a rich floral nose and peach and honeysuckle on the palette.
